Understanding Upholstery Cleaning Codes
Every piece of upholstered furniture sold in Canada carries a cleaning code on a manufacturer's tag, usually found under the cushions or on the underside of the frame. Before cleaning any piece in your North Bay home, our technicians check this code to determine the safest and most effective method.
- Code W (Water): Safe for water-based cleaning solutions. This is the most common code and covers most cotton, polyester, and microfiber furniture. Our hot water extraction method works exceptionally well on W-coded pieces.
- Code S (Solvent): Requires dry cleaning solvents only. Water can cause spotting, shrinking, or damage. We use specialized solvent-based products for these fabrics, which are common on some silk, rayon, and acetate upholstery.
- Code WS (Water or Solvent): Either method is safe. This gives our technicians flexibility to choose the approach that will produce the best results based on the type and severity of soiling.
- Code X (Vacuum Only): No liquid cleaning of any kind. These pieces should only be vacuumed or lightly brushed. We will advise you if your furniture carries this code and recommend appropriate maintenance options.
Common Fabrics in North Bay Homes
Furniture stores in North Bay and the broader Nipissing District sell a wide range of upholstered pieces. Here is how we handle the most common fabrics our technicians encounter in homes from downtown North Bay to Callander and the surrounding area:
- Microfiber and polyester: The most popular choice in North Bay family rooms. Durable, stain-resistant, and responds extremely well to hot water extraction. These fabrics clean up beautifully and dry quickly.
- Cotton and cotton blends: Common in mid-range to higher-end furniture. Absorbs more moisture than synthetics, so our extraction process focuses on thorough moisture removal to prevent watermarks.
- Leather and faux leather: Requires specialized pH-balanced cleaners followed by conditioning to prevent cracking. North Bay's dry winter air can accelerate leather deterioration, making periodic professional cleaning and conditioning especially important.
- Velvet: Requires careful handling to preserve the nap direction. We use low-moisture methods and specialized tools to clean velvet without crushing or matting the fibres.
- Linen: A natural fibre that can shrink if over-wetted. We use controlled moisture levels and appropriate drying techniques to maintain the fabric's shape and texture.
